Today, scientists have access to the latest medical technology, and they look at the problem of forgetting at the neuronal level.

Not long ago, neuroscientists found an area in the human brain, which is responsible for memory. It is called the hippocampus. And it is there that memory consolidation occurs, that is, the transition of short-term memory to long-term memory.

Experts from the Joint Center for Neural Genetics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the USA and the RIKEN Institute of Brain Science in Japan went further and, using optogenetics, were able to find special nerve cells that act as “cells” for storing memories. These cells were called engram cells (from the Greek “engram” – “internal record”).

The work was led by the Nobel Prize Laureate in Physiology or Medicine, Japanese molecular biologist Suzumi Tonegawa. Under his leadership, in 2016, a line of genetically modified mice was created with a model of Alzheimer’s disease and altered engram cells, which were activated by laser light during experiments. The mice, who received electric shocks, forgot about torture, but under the influence of light on the engram cells, they suddenly remembered them and did not want to go to the cell.

So scientists understood the mechanism of forgetting: it turned out that the reason lies in neural connections. In mice with amnesia, the density of dendritic spines in engram cells was reduced – these subtle outgrowths on neurons provide them with a connection with each other. Cell activation restored spine density and memory returned.

These experiences became the key to understanding the mechanisms of short-term memory.
