Memorial Day of Assyrian Martyrs

On August 7, the Assyrian world community celebrates Memorial Day of Assyrian Martyrs. This date was chosen by the World Assyrian Association in 1968.

Memorial Day of Assyrian Martyrs in History

Sad events are hidden behind the history of this day. On August 4, 1933, in the Iraqi city of Sumail, Muslim Arabs massacred Assyrian Christians. The massacre of people lasted a week, until August 11. During this time, Iraqi regular army soldiers killed more than 5,000 ordinary unarmed Assyrians. The peak of these terrible events came on August 7, which is why this day was chosen as the day of remembrance.

How the Day of Remembrance of Assyrian Martyrs is celebrated

On this day, not only the victims of the above-mentioned events are remembered and honored, but also all Assyrian martyrs from the time of Christ the savior to the present day. They remember the victims of genocide in Turkey during the First World War and those who lost their lives due to the barbaric actions of ISIS terrorists.

  • The Assyrians are one of the oldest peoples in the world, whose contribution to the development of world culture is difficult to overestimate.

Assyrians, like other nations, need a Memorial Day to honor those who sacrificed their lives for the integrity and preservation of their culture and traditions.
