International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction
The International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction is celebrated on the second Wednesday of October. This day was established by the UN General Assembly on December 22, 1989. Its purpose is to show society what to do to reduce the risk of natural disasters.
Disaster – a dangerous natural phenomenon that harms people. The peculiarity of a natural disaster is its unpredictability, that is, it is impossible to warn society in time about its occurrence.
Most often, people suffer from such natural disasters:
- Eruption of volcanoes
- Tsunami
- Hurricanes
- Floods
- Earthquakes
- Mass fires
- Snow avalanches
- Landslides
- Droughts
According to statistics, approximately 250 million people suffer from these natural disasters annually. 184 people die every day, and this number is constantly increasing due to urbanization and human impact on the environment.
