Christmas card day

Every year on December 9, the world celebrates Christmas card day. Its history began in Britain. English inventor and entrepreneur Sir Henry Cole, who usually wrote greetings to his friends and relatives himself, one day in 1843 decided to change something to make the process of writing greetings easier.

Therefore, at his request, John Calcotto Horsey created the world’s first Christmas card. Along with a wealthy family that had plenty of food and wine, it depicted poor people who received clothes and food as a Christmas gift.

Quite quickly, many people liked the idea and they began to congratulate their relatives and friends with various postcards.

Usually, all postcards are connected with the history of Christmas – decorated with religious and winter paraphernalia. A little later, in Europe and the United States of America, cards with moments of social life and images of cheerful and carefree children began to gain popularity.

  • There are some incredible postcards in the world. One such postcard was created thanks to nanotechnology in 2010 at the University of Glasgow. This is the smallest postcard – measuring 200×290 microns (a little larger than a hair), on which a Christmas tree and greetings were depicted in just 30 minutes.
