International Merlot Wine Day
International Merlot Wine Day is celebrated on November 7. This drink is made from the grape variety of the same name, which is the second most popular after Cabernet Sauvignon.
Winemakers appreciate Merlot for its unpretentiousness, resistance to most diseases and early ripening. The combination of these factors makes it possible to grow it not only in France and Italy, but also on the Australian and American continents.
The name “Merlot” appeared in France and means “little black thrush.” It is probably not known why the winegrowers decided to give this berry this name. There are two versions. According to the first, the color of ripe berries matches the color of the blackbird’s feathers. The second version indicates that grapes of this variety are favorite treats for these birds.
Proponents of Merlot wine claim that over the years the drink changes its aroma. If at first, notes of plum, cherry and violet are noticeable in the drink, then shades of chocolate and spices appear in it later. Also, the uniqueness of this wine is that it can be consumed both young and aged.
