International Day of Survivors of Suicide

Every year on the Saturday before Thanksgiving, the Western world celebrates International Suicide Survivors Day. This day is also called International Day for People Impacted by Suicide Loss – ISOSLD.

According to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, the memorial day was introduced in 1999 at the initiative of US Senator Harry Reid, who himself suffered from the loss of a loved one due to suicide. A politician introduced a resolution to mark the Saturday before Thanksgiving as “National Suicide Survivors Day.” The United States Congress supported the initiative and officially announced a commemorative date so that citizens could come together for spiritual healing and support.

  • According to WHO, more than 800,000 people die by suicide every year.

It brings the terrible pain of loss to loved ones and relatives and is a tragic problem of modern society. Therefore, a date was set, a suitable day to tell the population of the planet about the unfortunate statistics of suicides and to carry out measures to support people who suffered from the suicide of a loved one.
