The whole world celebrates August 22 International Day of Remembrance for Victims of Acts of Violence Based on Religion or Belief. This date was established by the UN General Assembly resolution A/RES/73/296. States reaffirmed their unconditional condemnation of violent acts, terrorist means and extremism, which still occur in some parts of the world. People suffer only because they belong to a different religion or have different beliefs.

On November 25, 1981, the UN General Assembly adopted the Declaration on the Elimination of All Forms of Intolerance and Discrimination Based on Religion and Belief. According to this document, every person has the right to freedom of thought, conscience and religion. But this right continues to be brutally violated in some countries of the world. Acts of violence and intolerance against individuals belonging to religious minorities continue, often of a criminal nature.
The purpose of creating the International Day of Remembrance for Victims of Acts of Violence Based on Religion or Beliefs
It was decided to celebrate this day immediately after the International Day of Remembrance of Victims of Terrorism. Commemoration of martyrs was started to draw society’s attention to people who suffer from abuse and injustice because of their religious beliefs. The purpose of this day is to find effective means of combating violence and support victims and their family members, legal protection in accordance with current legislation.
Only through purposeful protection on the part of the member states of the UN, it is possible to ensure the inviolability of people of other religious beliefs, their homes, and property, as well as to prevent encroachments on cultural places and religious shrines.
