Grenada Independence Day
Every year on February 7 Grenada (a small island nation in the Caribbean Sea) is celebrating Independence Daybecause it was on this day in 1974 that the country gained independence from Great Britain.
In 1498, Europeans discovered Grenada, where local tribes – Caribs – lived. First, the Spaniards settled on the island, and later the French and the English. It was the British and the French who could not divide Grenada between themselves and fought for it.
The capital of Grenada is the city of St. Georges. The area of the island is quite small – 344 km², and the number of people is about 112 thousand. The official language is English, but French patois dialects are used. Grenada is famous for the production and sale of spices, and also actively exports bananas and cocoa. By the way, the currency of Grenada is the East Caribbean dollar.
