Forgiven Sunday
What day is it?
Orthodox believers celebrate Goodbye Sunday every year on a different day of the month. The date of the holiday depends on the beginning of Great Lent. Before fasting, people need to cleanse themselves of evil thoughts and ask for forgiveness from everyone whom they may have upset or offended.
On this day, you should spend time with your family, communicate and sincerely forgive each other. Forgiven (or syrupy) Sunday is a holiday when you can’t quarrel and swear, on the contrary, you need to pay attention to the peace of mind of loved ones.
Ancient Ukrainians visited on this day and asked for forgiveness from their relatives and friends whom they had harmed during the year. If there is a spiritual need, you can also visit the graves of relatives to ask for forgiveness from them as well.
How did the idea of celebrating Forgiveness Sunday come about?
The history of the tradition of forgiveness began in Ancient Egypt. Over time, believers of various world religions improved it and gave their own name to the holidays – for Orthodox Christians it is Forgiven Sunday.
The Sunday before Lent is a special holiday in the calendar. According to the legend of the Old Testament, it was on this day that Adam and Eve were expelled from Eden. The reason for their exile was not even that they obeyed the Lord, but that they did not repent of their sin. Because of disobedience, the first people were forced to adapt to life on Earth.
IN Goodbye Sunday only those people who sincerely repent of their crimes deserve forgiveness. God requires only one thing from his believers on this day – complete repentance. This is how you can cleanse your soul and become closer to the Creator.
Also Forgiven Sunday is the day of the end of Shrovetide. This is the last day when you can still eat eggs and dairy products.
