World Dyslexia Awareness Day

The whole world dedicates the first full week of October to spreading information about dyslexia. This period was proposed by the International Dyslexia Association. The activities of the World Week call for patience with the fact that someone may be too slow in reading or writing.

This disorder was first discovered by the German doctor Oswald Berhan in 1881, and officially named “dyslexia” by the ophthalmologist Rudolf Berlin 6 years later. Berhan discovered the existence of a reading disorder by studying the case of a little boy. The kid had serious problems with learning to read and write correctly, despite the fact that he was generally smart, intellectually and physically developed.

What you need to know:

  • Dyslexia has different forms – someone only confuses letters in words, and someone cannot perceive the written text at all and write on their own.
  • About half of all dyslexics are left-handed.
  • According to various estimates, 10% of the population suffers from one or another degree of dyslexia.
  • Famous people suffering from dyslexia: Jennifer Aniston, Jamie Oliver, Keira Knightley.
  • A special font was invented to help children and adults read more easily.
