Day of the yellow pig

Every year on July 17, the world celebrates an atypical and little-known holiday – Day of the yellow pig. The event was started by mathematicians from the American city of Princeton named Michael Spivak and David Kelly in 1960.

Yellow Pig Day in History

Students of the mathematics department were actively engaged in studying the features of the number 17 and its meaning for mathematics. Later, Michael Spivak and David Kelly decided to create a separate holiday for their favorite number, even inventing a special symbol – yellow pig. This pig has 17 fingers and the same number of teeth.

How to celebrate Yellow Pig Day

On July 17, students and teachers of mathematics disciplines play various games related to this number and distribute images yellow pig, thereby spreading information about the holiday. In addition, a carol entitled “March of the Yellow Pig” was written specifically for such an event.
