Charity Day in Ukraine

What day is it?

Charity Day in Ukraine is a national holiday introduced to support charity at various levels of responsibility. A person can engage in charity personally, there are also many public organizations and charitable foundations that provide assistance to the needy. The principle of mercy must also be maintained at the state level.

Everyone knows what the term «charity» means. This is multifaceted help for those people who need it. It is not necessarily financial support or gift of property. An individual or a charitable organization can support a person morally, provide them with free professional help, direct them to people or organizations that will provide professional help on the right issue.

Charity Day is celebrated in Ukraine every year on the second Sunday of December. In 2021, this day falls on December 12. Not to be confused with the International Day of Philanthropy, which is celebrated on September 13.

How the idea to celebrate came about Charity Day in Ukraine?

Charity Day in Ukraine is celebrated at the official level. The holiday was introduced on the basis of the decree of the President of Ukraine Viktor Yushchenko, which was signed in 2007. The decree states that government agencies will help support initiatives and cases identified and implemented by charitable organizations.

Ukrainian Charity Exchange

In recent years, Ukrainian business representatives have shown considerable interest in charity. New organizations are emerging that collect funds for the needy. Among them, the Ukrainian Charity Exchange is one of the largest charitable organizations in Ukraine.

An online donation platform has been created on the basis of UBB. Many touching stories are presented on the service, and anyone who wants to can donate a certain amount to the project that touched him the most. You can also support several projects. The management of the organization carefully monitors that every penny is spent for the right purposes.

Statistics

In recent years, the issue of charity has gained state importance in our country. Domestic and foreign analysts testify that the participation of business structures in acts of charity is growing rapidly.

This only indicates that Ukrainian business has become more mature. Its leaders note that charity work in Ukraine is already at a fairly high level and continues to develop. Moreover, representatives of both medium-sized and large businesses join the charity.

World Giving Index

Interesting data is shown by the World Giving Index (WGI), an annual report published by the Charities Aid Foundation. The report is the world’s largest survey of charitable events from around the world.

The tenth annual report analyzes data from the past ten years, revealing trends in people’s philanthropic actions during economic crisis, economic recovery and geopolitical unrest. The report examines three aspects of behavior:

  • Helped a stranger.
  • Donated money to charity.
  • Spent volunteer time in the organization.

Ukraine ranks 101 in this list. According to research data, charity is found in 24% of cases in our country. Of these, 18% are helping a stranger, 35% are charitable donations, and 19% are volunteering.

How to celebrate Charity Day in Ukraine?

Every day there are people around who need help. Therefore, it is necessary to carry out acts of mercy, showing sensitivity and care for other people, not only on the day of charity, even if one person does not have enough strength and finances to carry out something grandiose. However, even a small deed done from the heart will cause gratitude or a smile from someone who needed help, this means that life will not be lived in vain:

  1. Share your stuff. If you, while going through the clothes in the closet, noticed that certain things have not been worn for a long time, do not throw them away. These days there are many charities that collect clothes for poor people. Unnecessary books and toys for you can bring indescribable joy to someone else, and an old table or chair will create coziness in the home of poor people.
  2. To share blood. If you want to do something special on Charity Day in Ukraine, why not donate blood. Every city has blood transfusion centers that collect blood from donors.
  3. Do not be indifferent to people. If you see a poor person or a homeless person, you can buy him/her a pie or other food at a restaurant.
  4. Help the needy people you know. If you have sick or poor relatives, find out how you can help them.
  5. Become a volunteer. Today there are many opportunities for philanthropy in medical facilities, orphanages, homes for the elderly, etc.
  6. Donate for treatment. Today, you can hear many stories of children and adults who have serious illnesses and need extremely expensive treatment. Even 10 hryvnias donated to a fund to help such a person can save his life.
  7. Take custody of the animal. It is not necessary to take a street dog or cat home, you can feed them. You can also establish guardianship over an animal from the shelter. Visit her, bring her food, take her for a walk.

Various public figures and bloggers enjoy great popularity and trust. For example, the well-known presenter and traveler Dmytro Komarov regularly conducts a charitable activity called «Cup of Coffee» (#Cup of Coffee).

Its essence is that anyone can sometimes refuse a cup of coffee and transfer the money for it to charity. Dmytro guides people (often children) who need immediate help. With an audience of thousands, he manages to save lives. Any of his subscribers can be sure that the funds will go directly to the cause and will not get lost anywhere.

In addition, Dmytro has a very interesting blog. The editors of DAY TODAY advise you to subscribe:

On this day, charitable organizations have the opportunity to review the results of their activities, make plans for the future and receive well-deserved congratulations. Charity Day in Ukraine is also an opportunity to draw the attention of those in power to the difficulties faced by philanthropists and to improve their working conditions.

Why is this event important?

There is no person in the world who could not engage in charity. The idea that a poor person who lacks money cannot do a good deed is false. It doesn’t matter what we do or how much we donate, even kind words of support are already charity.

However, serious help that can change the fate of thousands of needy people can be provided by wealthy people, companies and organizations that care about the fate of others.

There will always be needy people in our world, charity will never deal with poverty. Nevertheless, good deeds can improve and save the lives of millions. Charity Day, which has been celebrated in Ukraine since 2007, should call every Ukrainian to join charitable causes.
