Independence Day of Angola
Angola’s Independence Day is celebrated on November 11. It was on this day in 1975 that the country became free from Portugal and acquired the official status of a sovereign state.
The first historical records of Angola date back to the 6th century BC. e. At that time, quite developed tribes lived in the territory of the country, who were engaged in agriculture, were skilled in metalworking and ceramics. But in the 15th century e. the Portuguese came to these lands. After that, Angola became a colony of this European state for more than 400 years.
The War of Independence began in 1961 when the country’s population rose up against the brutal rule of the colonial government. The popular movement was facilitated by the “Carnation Revolution”, which began in 1975 in Portugal itself. Its new government agreed to recognize the independence of the Portuguese colonies, so Angola became independent on November 11 of the same year.
But the internal struggle for power led to a civil war that claimed the lives of more than half a million people and ended only in 2002.
