World Day of sobriety and the fight against alcoholism

Traditionally, October 2 is celebrated as World Alcohol Free Day. The history of the holiday begins in 2008. It was then that a meeting of the International Health Assembly took place in Geneva, at which Indian Minister Anbumani Ramadoss proposed to start this day. The decision was made without objection.

The date of the celebration was not chosen by chance, because the famous Indian figure Mahatma Gandhi was born on October 2. Ramadoss opined that drinking alcohol leads to bad consequences, so it needs to be dealt with. Since then, World No Alcohol Day promotes a healthy lifestyle.

  • All countries that are part of the WHO support the initiative to combat alcohol. After all, its use is often associated with diseases, domestic violence, road accidents. Every year, more than 5% of deaths occur precisely because of alcohol consumption.

World No Alcohol Day shows the people of the planet that sobriety is not only about feeling good, but also about a safe and happy life.

Also, this holiday is dedicated to John Finch – a person who devoted his whole life to spreading information among the population about the harmful effects of alcohol on health and promoting a healthy lifestyle.
