Taras Shevchenko Memorial Day

Every year on March 9 and 10, corresponding to the day of birth and death, the whole world, and especially Ukraine, honors memory of Taras Hryhorovych Shevchenko – a classic of Ukrainian literature. In 2022, the national symbol of Ukraine will be 208 years old. Taras Shevchenko was a brilliant writer, artist, historian, thinker and ethnographer.

The Ukrainian classic was born in 1814 in the village of Moryntsi in a serf family. Considering the great artistic talent of Taras, the poet Vasyl Zhukovsky and the artist Karl Bryullov helped the boy get the desired freedom in 1838. Shevchenko studied a lot, traveled and wrote. He died in 1861.

The first collection of poetic works is “Kobzar”, in honor of which the poet is often called Kobzar. In general, the work of Taras Shevchenko is multifaceted and popular, and his figure is interesting to the whole planet.


Many streets, educational institutions and even ships are named after Shevchenko, in literature there is a Shevchenko Prize and a scholarship named after the writer. A large number of monuments to Taras Hryhorovych are located both in Ukraine and abroad.
