Memorial Day of the heroes of Krut
Ukrainians honor January 29 the memory of the heroes of Krut – students who desperately held back the Bolshevik offensive near the railway station, as a result of which the Bolshevik troops lost their fighting capacity for several days, which gave the Ukrainian delegation time to conclude the Treaty of Berestey.
The strategically important station near Chernihiv Oblast, which led to Kyiv, was defended by senior students of the first youth military school in Ukraine named after Bohdan Khmelnytskyi. The Student smokehouse and the “Death” smokehouse were sent to help them. The youngest of the fighters was 16 years old. On the morning of January 29, an attack by a 4,000-strong army of Red Army soldiers on Ukrainian positions took place. The battle continued all day, and in the evening the Ukrainians retreated in an organized way towards Kyiv, destroying the tracks behind them.
At the same time, 27 young men, students of gymnasiums and universities, got lost in the dark and were captured by the Bolsheviks at the station. Later, they were buried near Askold’s grave in Kyiv. The sacrifice of the Ukrainian boys lives in the memory of the people to this day.
