The Day of Railway Workers of Ukraine is celebrated annually on November 4.

How did the idea to celebrate the Day of Railwaymen of Ukraine come about?

Railway connections were important for economic development and industry even in pre-revolutionary times. The Inkerman railway was built in 1843. It was one kilometer long and was horse-drawn.

In 1855, the Great Crimean Central Railway was built. It was created during the Crimean War and its total length is 23 km. From 1868, the active development of railway connections began.


During the time of tsarist Russia in 1896, Mykhailo Khilkov designated June 28 as a holiday for railway workers. In Soviet times, a lot of attention was also paid to the railway industry, which is why in 1936, the Day of Railway Workers was decided to be celebrated on July 30.

In independent Ukraine, since 1993, it has been celebrated on the first Sunday of August. However, in 2002, the President issued a Decree in which he designated November 4 as the Day of Railway Workers of Ukraine.

We should not forget that in 1861 the first train arrived in Lviv from Przemyśl. It was very similar to modern trains and from that moment the Ukrainian railway began to develop. Five years later, the section of the Odesa-Balta railway was built.

Modern Ukraine ranks third in terms of the length of the railway network in Europe. Today, there are 6 railway branches in Ukraine and they connect all regions of the country. About 272,000 people work in the railway sector. Railways of Ukraine cooperate with railways of 7 neighboring countries. Ukrzaliznytsia is the main railway transport management body in Ukraine.

  • Today, railway tracks in Ukraine stretch for a total of 30,000 kilometers, this indicator ranks 6th in Europe and 12th in the world. There are 120 large railway stations and more than 1500 stations in Ukraine.
  • The longest route for all the years of existence of the Ukrainian railway is “Uzhhorod-Lysychansk” with a length of 1,683 kilometers. The “Zakarpattia” train plies this route, which is on the road for 32 hours and 35 minutes, making stops at 43 stations.
