International Mountain Day
Every year, the world celebrates the International Mountain Day – a holiday that calls for the development of mountain regions. The holiday was founded in early 2003 on the initiative of the United Nations, and the idea of Mountain Day appeared in December 2002.
Various thematic events are held for the International Mountain Day to attract attention and increase public interest, because mountains are extremely important for our planet. They occupy one quarter of the entire territory, are a reserve for plants and animals, moreover, about 10% of people live in mountainous areas.
The highest mountain in the world is Everest (Jomolungma), its height reaches 8848 meters. In Ukraine, the highest point is one of the Carpathian mountains – Hoverla, the height of which is 2061 meters.
