International Day of Older Persons
October 1 is the International Day of Older Persons all over the world. The holiday was approved by the UN General Assembly in 1990.
Initially, this day was celebrated in Europe, later in America. Starting from the 1990s, the whole world supported the celebration initiative, including Ukraine – since 1991.
This day is designed to remind everyone that old age is inevitable, and that constant efforts should be made to help the elderly feel more comfortable, to feel their own value. For example, the medical care needs of the elderly are 50% higher than those of the middle-aged population, and the need for hospitalization is almost three times higher.
- The increase in the number of elderly people indicates that the quality of life in the country is at a high level. Statistics show that the best conditions for the elderly are created in Canada, Germany and Switzerland.
