International Day Against Impunity
November 23 is the International Day Against Impunity. It was introduced in 2009 by the IFEX International Association, which was founded in 1992 in Montreal to protect freedom of speech. Today, it includes more than 70 organizations from many countries of the world.
November 23 was chosen because on that day in the Philippines, 58 people, including 32 journalists and media representatives, were kidnapped and killed in the city of Ampatuan.
The goal of the initiators of the day of the fight against impunity is to draw attention to the problems of those who have been threatened or pressured for using their right to freedom of voice. Also, the members of the association emphasize that silence of cases of violence creates impunity and provokes further illegal actions. They cite the facts that 90% of the murders of journalists over the past decade have gone unsolved, and their executioners and killers still remain unpunished.
