Independence Day of the Republic of Uganda

Independence Day in Uganda is celebrated on October 9. In 1962, the country gained independence from Britain.

In 1888, Great Britain managed to seize control of all of Uganda. Other European states also claimed the role of metropolis. The conflict continued until 1890, when Great Britain and Germany concluded an agreement, after which British rule was established in the country.

The country was controlled by Britain, but it was never a colony. After the Second World War, protests began. The local population wanted not only British, but also Africans to work in government bodies. This happened for the first time in 1945, and within 10 years half of the country’s power positions were occupied by representatives of the indigenous population. Democratic elections were held in 1961, after which the country became independent in 1962.

It is interesting to know that

  • In Uganda, there is a rule about the protection of trees. If one is cut down, three must be planted instead.
  • Fried grasshopper is the most popular dish in Uganda. If a tourist is served this dish, it means that he is considered a special guest.
  • Houses are made of clay, built mainly by women. Men install only the roof.
