Family – what could be more important than a family hearth, where you can relax, rest, and also gain mental balance. Family – these are the people closest to you who are always ready to help and support you in a difficult moment. Only with your family members can you share your joys, achievements, as well as failures and difficult moments of life. That is why Family day, which is celebrated in Ukraine annually on July 8, is extremely important for each of us. Sometimes it happens that we forget about the importance of the family hearth, we stop appreciating each other, but the purpose of this holiday is to unite family members again.

How did the idea of ​​celebrating Family Day come about?

Holiday Family Day in our country, it is considered quite young – it was first recognized in 2012.

The date of July 8 is not accidental at all, because it is on this day that the Orthodox world celebrates the Day of Peter and Fevronia. These saints are called to protect marriage and family ties. The purpose of the celebration is to strengthen family values ​​in society, to increase the value of family relationships and traditions, to promote the importance of raising children in a large and united family.

Family members are the closest people in the world. And it is during the celebration of Family Day that each of us has the opportunity to reflect on how much we are pampered to have relatives and close people around, with whom we can forget about the disagreements and misfortunes of this not always friendly world.

Interesting facts about the family in Ukraine

In recent years, Ukrainians have paid great attention to the study of their family tree. So, even in 2017, there were more than 6,000 appeals to the State Archives Service of Ukraine, and in the 2020s, these numbers increased several times. Experts attribute this to many factors, including the opening of archives to the public and greater interest in one’s family tree.

Along with archival research, DNA tests are gaining popularity in our country, which allow you to research your ethnic origin.

In general, Ukrainians are interested in creating harmonious family relations. The Ministry of Justice of Ukraine reports that in 2019, about 30,000 marriages were concluded and more than 4,000 divorces were registered. Statistics for Ukraine in general: about 240,000 marriages and 40,000 divorces.

In the first quarter after the start of the quarantine due to the spread of COVID-19 in Ukraine, 5,130 couples got married, while about 1,800 couples got divorced.

In addition to the official Ukrainian holiday of Family Day, there is also International Family Day, introduced at the UN General Assembly in 1993. This day is celebrated on May 15. Ukrainians also like to celebrate such family holidays as Mother’s Day and Father’s Day, which fall in June.

Modern problems of Ukrainian families

Today there is a tendency for families to live separately. According to the Ministry of Social Policy of Ukraine, more than two hundred thousand Ukrainian children are brought up in families in which one or two parents temporarily live abroad in order to earn money. Also, many family members work in large cities of Ukraine and visit their family on weekends.

The number of unregistered marriages is increasing. Thus, when in 1991 there were 11-12% of children in unregistered marriages in the country, in 2015 this figure was almost twice as high and amounted to 21%.

In rural areas, couples very often do not register their marriage officially and live in a civil marriage. The main reason for this is the receipt of social benefits from the state for single mothers.

Over the past 20 years, the trend in the number of divorces has been maintained. So, on average, this indicator is 40% of divorces per year from the number of registered marriages for the same period of time.

How to celebrate Family Day?

• This family holiday can be celebrated in the best Ukrainian traditions. A cheerful feast in the countryside, where elderly parents, their children, nephews, and grandchildren gather, gives the family an opportunity to get closer and feel the support of loved ones.
• You can also gather exclusively in the circle of your family. Arrange a family photo session, go out into nature, come up with entertainment for children.
• Changing roles is a kind of game that allows each member of the family to take the other’s place in order to understand the difficulties they are facing. During the game on the day of the holiday, children take the place of parents, and parents become children.
• Make a wish list with your family, and then try to make it come true as soon as possible. It can be an interesting family trip or the purchase of a new TV for family gatherings.
• Throughout the day, try to hug your family members as often as possible. This is how you show how important they are to you.
