Day of the Ukrainian Cossacks
In 1999, the President of Ukraine issued a decree on the appointment October 14 Day of the Ukrainian Cossacks. The date was not chosen by chance, since it is on this day that believers celebrate the Intercession of the Mother of God, who was considered the heavenly protector of the Cossacks. That is why this holiday is also called the Cossack Protection. Also on this day, Sichovites elected new chieftains.
At the end of the 15th century information about the Cossacks appeared for the first time in historical documents. At that time, the Cossacks guarded the borders between the Principality of Lithuania and the Crimean Khanate.
Freedom-loving Cossacks sought above all to establish an independent state. A center was founded on one of the islands of the Dnipro – Zaporizhzhya Sich. For a long time, after a series of loud battles led by Hetman Khmelnytskyi, the Cossack troops caused great fear among the enemies. But at the end of the 18th century Zaporizhzhya Sich was destroyed by order of Catherine II.
At the beginning of the 90s of the last century, the population began to show interest in their past, to study the history and traditions of the Cossacks, which led to the emergence of a number of Cossack public organizations.
The Mother of God was considered the heavenly patroness of the Cossacks, and the Cossacks went to spend the winter in the farms under her protection, so this day became the day of the Ukrainian Cossacks. The patronage was a special event for the Cossacks, also because it was on this day that they elected a new chieftain of Sich.
The Day of Ukrainian Cossacks has a fixed date and is celebrated every year on October 14.
