Day of the city of Chernivtsi

City Day is celebrated in Chernivtsi every year on the first Saturday of October. Usually, the holiday lasts for several days. Monthers receive greetings from the mayor, watch a concert program, participate in festivals.

The city is the ancient center of Bukovyna, the first mention of it dates back to the beginning of the 15th century. During its history, Chernivtsi was under the rule of the Principality of Moldavia, Austria, Romania, and the USSR.

The regional center is located 40 kilometers from the border with Romania. The population is about 265,000 people, and the entire Chernivtsi agglomeration has about 700,000 people.


Chernivtsi is known for its ancient architecture. One of the architectural buildings of the city is included in the UNESCO World Heritage Site – the residence of the Metropolitans of Bukovina and Dalmatia (Chernivtsi National University).

The Prut River flows through the city, and there are 9 lakes in total on the territory of Chernivtsi. Chernivtsi is a very green city. Here, in addition to parks and squares, there is a Botanical Garden, where relict trees grow.

Interesting Facts

  • At one time, Mykhailo Bulgakov practiced medicine in the local synagogue.
  • The Second World War almost did not touch the city – the maximum number of architectural monuments has been preserved here.
  • Movie actress Mila Kunis was born in this city.
  • The only yard in the country paved with wooden cobblestones is located in Chernivtsi.
