Civil disobedience – conscious refusal or peaceful protest of citizens to obey unjust laws, according to their conscience.
What is civil disobedience?
In 1849, the American writer Henry Thoreau used this term for the first time in his essay, where he gave an example of refusing to pay taxes, protesting against the injustice of government officials.
Manifestations of civil disobedience were demonstrated by Mahatma Gandhi in the struggle for the freedom of India, Martin Luther King – for the civil rights of blacks in the USA. Civil disobedience was used to combat socio-economic, religious, ethnic and racial discrimination.
The importance of holding the Day of Disobedience
The main goal is to draw public attention to the problem and encourage legislative bodies to change the legislation accordingly.
This holiday is celebrated precisely because of the effectiveness of this method of fighting for justice.
