Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary (in Western Christians)
August 15 is celebrated in Catholic churches Dormition of the Holy Mother of God. On this day, the earthly life of the Holy Virgin Mary ended. After that, she was exalted by Jesus Christ and crowned as the Queen of Heaven. Assumption is considered one of the most important feasts of the Mother of God.
There is no information in the Gospel about where and how long Mary stayed after Christ’s Ascension. There is no exact date of her death. There is information about these events in apocryphal sources. This has led to the fact that in different countries and religions this day is celebrated on different dates.
The first celebration of the Assumption was initiated by the Council of Ephesus. During the reign of Emperor Mauritius, by his order, the holiday was timed to the victory over the Persians and began to be celebrated on August 15.
Celebration traditions
According to tradition, one should go to church in the morning, carrying wheat of the new harvest for consecration. You should also light a candle in the church and ask the Mother of God for the health of loved ones. In residential premises, it is customary to set sumptuous tables, in the center of which there should be consecrated bread made of fresh flour.
It is strictly prohibited
- On this day, it is absolutely impossible to quarrel and refuse help.
- It is interesting that earlier it was considered forbidden to walk barefoot in the dew on the Assumption, because on this day the dew turns into the tears of the Mother of God. The one who did this was waiting for trouble and illness.
- Bad luck could also haunt people who wore old or uncomfortable shoes.
