World Soil Day

Every year on December 5, the world celebrates the international holiday – Soil Day. The official establishment of the World Soil Day took place in December 2013 thanks to the United Nations, but the idea of the holiday was announced by the participants of the International Union of Soil Science back in 2002. The date of the celebration was chosen in accordance with the day of the defense of the thesis on the topic “Russian Black Earth” by geologist Vasyl Dokuchaev in 1883.

International Soil Day aims to unite soil science professionals around the world, and also to increase public awareness of the importance of soils for the functioning of ecosystems and food security. This event should remind people that the soil is a non-renewable natural resource, so we should use it rationally and protect it.

By the way, Ukrainian soil is known to the entire planet and is considered the main national treasure, which is carefully protected by the Ukrainian authorities.
