World Monkey Day
On December 14, various countries around the world celebrate an interesting date – World Monkey Day. World Monkey Day is not an official holiday. It arose on the initiative of famous artists Casey Sorrow and Eric Millikin, who in 2000 proposed to establish such a day at the international level. At that time, the initiators of the event were studying at Michigan State University in the Faculty of Arts. The holiday became popular when Sorrow and Millikin began incorporating Monkey Day into their original works and alternative comics and publishing them online.
The celebration of World Monkey Day is supported in various countries of the world – Great Britain, Canada, Italy, USA, Pakistan, India, Turkey, Estonia, Colombia, Thailand. The purpose of the holiday is to tell the world about charming and very intelligent primates. Art schools and organizations, including the Louvre and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, are actively involved in celebrating the event.
In the zoos of Pakistan, creative competitions and educational activities are held in honor of the holiday. Children’s performances in primate masks are arranged, society is informed about the threats faced by animals. Zoos in Estonia introduce intelligence testing of macaques and hold auctions for the sale of works of art created by chimpanzees. Also, in different countries, the holiday is celebrated with costume parties and humorous competitions.
