World Day Against Poverty
Every year July 1 is celebrated in different countries World Day Against Poverty. The purpose of the festive events is to draw the attention of the world society to countries suffering from poverty. According to statistics, more than 800 million people in the world currently live below the extreme poverty line.
In 2001, at the next UN summit, the member states adopted the Declaration, which formulated the Millennium Development Goals. In addition to other tasks, the document, as one of the global goals for the entire planet, prioritized the fight against poverty. The Declaration clearly defined the periods for the realization of this goal:
- 1990-2015 – halving the share of the population whose daily income is less than $1;
- 1990-2015 – halving the share of people who are hungry;
- ensuring full and productive employment, decent work for all, including women and youth.
Most of all, people suffered from hunger in the countries of East Asia, Latin America, Africa and the Caribbean. It was here that it was possible to achieve significant progress and reduce the number of hungry people by 216 million by the end of 2015. But some countries still remain in a state of protracted crisis. Therefore, on the initiative of the UN World Day Against Poverty continue to be noted to remind of the need to further solve existing problems.
