World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought

On June 17 every year, an environmental event is celebrated – World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought. This date was established by the United Nations in 1995. The date of the celebration was chosen in honor of the adoption of the UN Convention to Combat Desertification, which took place on this day in 1994.

The purpose of the World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought

Degradation and desertification lands threatens not only the ecology of our planet, but also socio-economic development. Because unusable soils provoke hunger and migration.

Therefore, the goal Universal Day of Combating Desertification and Drought is to raise awareness about the loss of land and soil, involve society in the association for the purpose of solving the environmental problem by protecting the land, increasing soil fertility and saving energy resources.


Statistics

  • We are irreversibly losing 12 million hectares of land per year. Among them, about 75 million tons are fertile soils.
  • Almost half of the population faces the problem of lack of water resources.
  • Approximately 57% of the territory of Ukraine is affected by erosion.
