Sava’s day

Every year on March 29, the Orthodox Church honors the memory of the holy martyr Savin of Ermopol. People call this day Savin or Vizkov.

Savinus held a leadership position in the Egyptian city of Hermopol in the 3rd century and was a Christian. During the persecution of Christians, Savin was captured by the imperial authorities, forcing him to renounce the faith of the Lord. The holy martyr endured terrible torture, but remained faithful to Christ. Then the furious pagans drowned Savin in the river.

March 29 is also called Cart Day, because earlier at this time carts were usually prepared for the summer: inspected, repaired, washed. After the snow disappeared, sleds were no longer suitable for road transport, they were replaced by carts.

Traditions and omens on Sava’s Day

  • IN Sava’s day people went around their village on a cart, believing that it would bring good luck.
  • In addition, the creaking of a certain wheel foreshadowed something specific: the right front one – wealth, the left one – illness; the creaking of the rear right wheel indicated the onset of success, the left one – debts.
  • Birds bathing in a puddle promises warmth.
  • The fast movement of clouds portends good weather.
  • Low water level in the river – we expect a bad harvest.

Have a great day
