On August 5, residents Congo celebrates Independence Day from French enslavement. Liberation took place in 1960 after armed representatives of indigenous ethnic groups seized power in Brazzaville.

From the end of the 15th century in the territory of the modern Republic of the Congo, the Portuguese launched a massive slave trade, which led to rebellions and the disintegration of the country into several small regions. During industrialization, the great powers of Europe decided to make the Congo their colony. France won this dispute, so the country became only a source of natural resources, and its population became practically free labor.

Unbearable living conditions led to an armed coup. It was headed by Fulbert Yulou, who later became the President of the Republic of Congo.

  • It should not be confused with the neighboring Democratic Republic of the Congo. By the way, the capitals of both countries are opposite each other. This is the only case in the world when the main cities of two states are in sight.
