Open-air cinema day

June 6 is celebrated Open-air cinema day. In 1933, the first drive-in movies opened in the USA specifically for motorists. Lovers of traveling in their own cars had the opportunity to spend their free time watching an interesting movie in the open air. Such a cinema was founded by Richard Hollingshead. Later, similar establishments appeared in many American cities.

How did the idea of creating an open-air cinema come about?

A simple car sales manager at Whiz Auto Products car dealerships realized an interesting idea, but first he put a lot of effort into trying out a new experiment at home. Richard invented the optimal option for installing the screen in such a way that it was visible from any place on the site. On August 6, 1932, Hollingshead visited the patent office to officially secure the copyright for his invention. On May 16, 1933, patent No. 1909537 was issued for 17 years. Now it was forbidden to open similar cinemas without the permission of the author.

The most interesting feature of the invention was the replacement of stationary seats with parking spaces for cars. On June 1, 1933, Hollingshead, along with his cousin Warren Smith, founded Park-in-Theatres Inc., and on June 6, he opened the first drive-in movie theater in his hometown of Cadman.
