Memorial Day of St. Theodosius of Chernihiv

February 18 is celebrated by Orthodox Christians Memorial Day of St. Theodosius of Chernihiv. He was respected and loved for his diligence and ascetic life, which served as an example for the flock.

Feodosii was born in the family of priest Nikita Ughlytskyi. He received his education at the Kyiv Fraternal College at the Kyiv Epiphany Monastery. The young man devoted all his free time to prayers and reading Psalms. Thanks to the influence of his mentor, Lazar Baranovich, Feodosius decided to dedicate himself to serving God.

His spiritual journey began with a monastic abdication in the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra.

While serving as the abbot of the Kyiv Vydubyt Monastery, St. Theodosius restored the monastery devastated as a result of military operations.

After his appointment as the archimandrite of the Chernihiv Yeletsky Monastery, St. Theodosius took an active part in church events and had significant influence and authority. He zealously supported the spirit of religious piety, contributed to the restoration of old and the founding of new monasteries and churches.

Saint and miracle worker Theodosius died in February 1696. He was solemnly buried in the Borys-Hlib Cathedral. For 200 years, Saint Theodosius was canonized, and his incorruptible body was transferred to the Holy Trinity Cathedral. Pilgrims still visit here and pray for help. Miraculous cases of healing and descent of grace from relics are recorded in a special book.
