Memorial Day of Saints Cosmas and Damian, miracle workers

November 14 is the day of commemoration of the holy miracle workers Cosmas and Damian of Asia. During their lifetime, these brothers were doctors and lived on the border between the 3rd and 4th centuries. According to legend, their relics continued to produce many miraculous healings even after death.

The boys were born in Asia to a pagan Greek family. But due to the fact that the father died very early, the upbringing of the children fell on the mother Feodotia, who professed the Christian faith. She also put a lot of effort into making her sons learn medicine. For a righteous way of life, the Lord gave them the gift of healing people from ailments. Therefore, every day a large number of sick people came to them, from whom the brothers never took a salary.

But one day, a woman who had been rejected by all other doctors, for her healing from a disease that others thought was incurable, asked Damian in the name of the Lord to take three eggs from her. The young man agreed, but this provoked condemnation from his brother. Therefore, when Cosmas was dying, he ordered not to bury him and his brother next to each other.

Knowing this, people did not know what to do with Damian’s body after death. But a camel, healed of rabies by the saints, came to them and said that they should be buried together. Thus, after death, the brothers reunited again and created many more miracles.
