Independence Day of North Macedonia

September 8 in North Macedonia celebrates its main national holiday – Independence Day, it is also called simply “September 8”. Until 1991, North Macedonia was part of Yugoslavia. On September 25, 1991, the Macedonian Parliament adopted the Declaration of Independence, on November 17, the Constitution. Of all the republics that were once part of Yugoslavia, only Macedonia managed to gain sovereignty peacefully, without military unrest.

But due to the protests of Greece due to the fact that the name of the country contains the word “Macedonia”, and there is a region with the same name in Greece, the independent status of the republic on the international arena was recognized only after 2 years. The dispute with Greece lasted until 2019, as a result of which the country changed its official name to the Republic of North Macedonia on February 12.
