European beaver day

Eurasian Beaver Day is held annually on October 18. The European, or Eurasian, beaver was once widespread in Eurasia, but for the sake of fur the animals were hunted almost until their destruction. At the turn of the 20th century, only 1,200 individuals remained from eight relict beaver populations in Europe and Asia. Later, these species were reintroduced on the territory of their former habitat, as well as on the territory of Spain, England, Scandinavia and several regions of Mongolia and China.

This day is a good opportunity to remind people about the problem of animal extermination. Environmentalists call beavers wildlife engineers and emphasize that their way of life is useful in the fight against climate change. Dams built by beavers create marshy floodplains and help offset drought damage. Such floodplains are characterized by a variety of vegetation that converts carbon dioxide into oxygen.
