Day of the city of Zaporizhzhia

Every year on the first Saturday of October, the people of Zaporozhye celebrate Zaporozhye City Day. This industrial center was founded in 1770, and in 1806 the settlement received the status of a county town. Approximately 43% of the region’s population lives in modern Zaporizhzhia.

Zaporozhye is a large industrial center. Powerful enterprises of the machine-building, energy, metallurgical, and mining industries are concentrated here. Many research institutions have been opened. For example, Motor-Sich is a large manufacturer of engines for aviation. The Zaporizhzhia Automobile Plant is now the only one in the country with full-cycle production.

• In this city there is one of the longest avenues in the world — Soborny, which is equal to 10,800 m.
• Dniprovska HPP is a dam 50 meters high.
• Khortytsia, which is the largest island of the Dnipro, is located in Zaporizhzhia. There is a museum «Zaporizka Sich», where you can see a performance of equestrian theater, visit a museum of the history of Cossacks and a museum of shipping.
• The children’s railway is a 9-kilometer track where real trains run, but on a reduced scale. It has its own small station, a long tunnel, you can buy tickets at a real ticket office.
