International Day for the Destruction of Weapons

What is this event?

On July 9, 2001, the UN launched the celebration International day for the destruction of weapons.

International Day for the Elimination of Weapons in History

This event is related to the negative consequences of long-term armed conflicts in the countries located in the south-east of Europe.

Following the settlement of the conflicts, the region was marked by the presence of large quantities of weapons that exceeded their needs, were illegally possessed and used for criminal activities, often resulting in human casualties.

In order to prevent the illegal flow of weapons, their responsible destruction and security on the territory of the Balkan Peninsula states, the UN member states signed the Regional Plan for Combating Excessive Accumulation and Illegal Distribution of Weapons.

The RRS and UNDP were the initiators of the project, the main component of which is support and provision of financial assistance to the authorities of the countries of the South-Eastern part of Europe regarding the disposal of surplus and confiscated weapons.

During the years of the campaign, measures to reduce the number of weapons were carried out in almost all countries with the support of the EU, UNDP and various non-governmental organizations that provided assistance for the successful implementation of these projects.
