Cyborg Memorial Day

Ukrainians celebrate January 16 Cyborg Memorial Day. This important commemorative date for Ukraine was introduced at the initiative of Ukrainian fighters who survived the struggle for DAP. On this day, Ukrainians honor the defenders of the Donetsk airport. They were called cyborgs for their endurance, stability and courage. They became a symbol of patriotism and devotion to independent Ukraine. Fighters who defended the resort received state awards (some posthumously).

The struggle for Donetsk airport began on May 26, 2014, when separatists and mercenaries seized the airport’s terminals. On the same day, Ukrainian fighters regained control of the airport, dealing a devastating blow to the terrorists. The hostilities lasted until January 2015 and ended only after the complete destruction of the terminals. More than 200 Ukrainian soldiers gave their lives for Ukraine, and 500 were wounded.

Medics and volunteers also took part in the defense under heavy fire. Their exploits are also honored in Cyborg Memorial Day.
