World Bread Day

On the initiative of the International Union of Bakers and Confectioners, in 2006, the calendars of many countries around the world were enriched with another important event – World Bread Day. Since then, it has been celebrated annually on October 16, because this date is dedicated to two more important events: in 1945, the United Nations created the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), and since 1979, World Food Day has been celebrated. FAO is engaged in solving problems of hunger and development of world agriculture.

The flour product, which many peoples of the world consider the main food, has a long history. More than 5,000 years ago, the first bread was not similar to the modern bread, the ancient Egyptians prepared it in the form of porridge from cereal grains. Later, they began to bake bread cakes made of coarsely ground grain on a hot stove. Already in the III millennium BC. e. baked 3 dozen types of bread. The recipe for making a flour product came to European peoples from Greece and the Roman Empire.

  • Before the appearance of wooden plates, food was served on pieces of bread. The rich fed cattle with “bread plates” or gave them to beggars.
  • In ancient times, white bread was available to the upper strata of society, only gray and black bread was found in the diet of the poor.
  • In January 1996, Mexican bakers baked a flour record holder, the length of which was 9.2 km.
  • The fastest bun was baked in the USA. It was baked in 8 minutes and 13 seconds.
  • A Ukrainian loaf with a diameter of 1.6 m, a weight of 1.5 cents and a height of 65 cm entered the Guinness Book of Records.
