The feast of the acquisition of the relics of Saint Maxim the Greek

July 4 is celebrated by the Orthodox Church The feast of the acquisition of the relics of Saint Maxim the Greek. This is the day of commemoration of the outstanding writer and translator, who invested a lot of effort in the development of Orthodoxy in Russia. The saint spent the last years of his life in the Trinity-Sergius Monastery. It was here that he rested in the middle of the 16th century on the day of commemoration of his heavenly patron, the righteous Maxim the Confessor, and was buried in the northwestern wall of the Church of the Ascension of the Holy Spirit. A chapel was built on this site, which is called Maxim’s tent.

Maxim the Greek is considered the patron saint of translators, pupils and students. The annual commemoration of the relics is a manifestation of the love of the church and the entire Christian people for the martyr, who was unjustly condemned and accused of heresy during his life for his love of truth and uprightness. According to various sources, he spent 20 to 30 years in prison and exile. In 1591, Patriarch Iov inspected the relics of Maxim the Greek, ordered a service for the saint, and later his first iconographic images appeared.
