The birthday of the Linux operating system

August 25 is celebrated all over the world The birthday of the Linux operating platformwhich has become the symbol of all open source software.

The history of the creation of the Linux operating system

And it all started as one of millions of student projects. Young people often want to change the current order of things, and some manage to do it. For example, Linus Torvalds, a student from the University of Helsinki. Linus at the university worked on a computer on which the Unix-like operating system SunOS was installed. The student worked, enjoyed and wanted to have the same platform on his home computer. Such an OS for home gadgets did not yet exist, so the future genius of cybernetics began to look for ways to create it. Linus started writing his own product, inspired by Andrew Tannenbaum’s book, for which the Minix platform – a Unix clone – was developed for educational purposes.

The history of the creation of Linux is interesting because at first Torvalds had no plans to bring his creation to the world stage, he perceived it as a hobby. On August 25, 1991, Torvalds finished work on his operating system. He came up with the name for his product by combining his own name and the name of Unix. Later, he intended to change it to Freax, but Linux gained momentum so quickly that the plans did not become reality.

In a few years, Linux was installed on millions of personal computers and portable devices.
