Memorial Day of Martyr Nikander the Egyptian

The Orthodox Church celebrates March 28 every year the memory of the holy martyr Nikander the Egyptian.

Nicander lived in Egypt in the 3rd century, when Emperor Diocletian was persecuting Christians. During his lifetime, Saint Nikander helped the needy, treated sick people, and took care of the Christian people in every possible way. Once, in 302, Nikander of Egypt decided to secretly bury the murdered Christians, but was noticed by the pagans. The holy martyr was mercilessly tortured by removing his skin, but he never betrayed the faith of Christ, so he was executed.

  • The people believe that on March 28, it is necessary to collect healing herbs in the forest and make medicine from them. Nikander of Egypt is addressed with a prayer for health.
