Stribog’s Day (Slavs)

Eastern Slavs celebrate August 21 Stribog Daywho was born from the breath of Rod.

Who is Stribog?

He is considered the lord of the wind, the one who can cause or stop a storm, hurricane or other aerial phenomenon. He also controls thunder and lightning together with his brother Perun. According to legend, he lived on the island of Buyani, daily creating 77 winds that can dry up rivers and destroy forests. He directed them in all directions.

Children and grandchildren of Stribog

Winds that bring destruction are always considered scary and mysterious. Our ancestors conjured tornadoes, calling Perun for help and throwing knives, stones and sticks at them. All winds, quiet and strong, were considered the children and grandchildren of Stribog. They had the names Posvist, Siverko, Podaga, Poludennyk and Polunochnyk. Also, the Slavs treated the wind as a soul (spirit). They brought him a donation in the form of cereals, grains, scraps of cloth, bread, porridge. Donations were scattered in the field, begging the winds for good and generous harvests.
