Philemon’s day

What day is it?

December 27, according to Orthodox Christian traditions, is celebrated Philemon’s day and the Day of Remembrance of the Martyrs Apollonius, Feotichus and Arians. They died in Egypt for their faith in Jesus Christ.

During the reign of Emperor Diocletian, massive persecution of Christians took place. They were brutally tortured and executed for rejecting paganism.

Reader Apollonius was afraid of suffering and the death penalty. He bribed the pagan Philemon to wear his clothes and sacrifice to idols instead of him. But the light of the Lord came upon Philemon, he believed in Christ and openly declared it. Hearing him, Apollonius felt ashamed and repented. He confessed his faith. After brutal torture, both martyrs were executed by cutting off their heads.

Ruler Arian, who participated in the torture, was healed at the graves of the executed martyrs. This miracle made him repent and be baptized. Arians was supported by one of his bodyguards – Feotichus. They were severely punished for such a step. Exhausted, they were tied in sacks and thrown into the sea.

What can be done on Philemon’s Day?

  • On Philemon’s day, Christians thoroughly clean their homes, because they believe that on this day there is a struggle between light and darkness, and evil spirits gather in the homes of untidy owners.
  • It is also believed that evil spirits are afraid of water, so on December 27 it is customary to wash and sprinkle water throughout the day to protect yourself from evil spirits.
