Memorial Day of St. Paul of Neokesarii

January 5 is celebrated in the Christian world Memorial Day of St. Paul of Neokesarii. The Bishop of Neocaesareia was very famous for his virtues and unwavering faith.

In those days, the ruler of Nicomedia, Lykinius, conducted cruel persecutions against Christians. Having heard about Bishop Paul, he summoned him to his court.

Terrible torments befell the monk: he was starved, threatened, severely beaten. But his spirit remained indomitable. The most severe punishment befell Paul: a red-hot iron hoop was placed in his hands and pulled with staples until the iron cooled. The bishop’s hands were burned and could no longer function. He was sent to prison.

When Constantine the Great ascended the throne, all exiles and prisoners for their faith were released and returned to their homeland. When Saint Paul at the First World Council in Nicaea, they were presented to Emperor Constantine, he laid hands on the saint’s hands and kissed them.

Blessed Paul returned to his city and led the flock until his death.
