What day is it?

The Day of Court Employees of Ukraine is celebrated every year on December 15. Despite the fact that this professional holiday is established at the state level, it is not a day off in the national calendar. This date is another opportunity to honor those people who are responsible for justice in our country. Honest, decent and impartial people should work in courts. The goal of the state is to provide modern courts with precisely such employees.

How did the idea to celebrate the Day of Court Employees of Ukraine come about?

On December 8, 2000, a presidential decree was signed in Independent Ukraine on the implementation of the “Day of Court Employees”. The document was signed by the current President of Ukraine, Leonid Kuchma. The decree emphasizes the importance of the work of judges and other employees of the judicial system in ensuring justice and protecting the rights of every Ukrainian.

In addition, a fair trial strengthens the country, promotes the approval and support of democratic principles in it.


December 15, 1917

The date of December 15 was not chosen by chance. It was on this day in 1917 that the General Court was established as the highest body of the judicial system in Ukraine, which at that time was called the UNR (Ukrainian People’s Republic). It included: civil, administrative and penal departments.

The activity of the first General Court of the Ukrainian People’s Republic spread throughout the country, and its activity consisted in supervising the activities of courts and individual judges. The head of the institution was to be the chief judge, who was the oldest. For the first time, the composition of the General Court of the Ukrainian People’s Republic was approved in January 1918 by a vote of the Small Council. And the first meeting took place on January 15 of the following year.

This was the first step in the creation of a full-fledged judicial system in independent Ukraine, which was supposed to put on a pedestal the importance of the rule of law.

Peculiarities of the modern judicial system of Ukraine

The highest branch of the modern judicial system in our country is the Supreme Court. The most important cases are considered in this cassation instance. Also, the judicial system consists of appellate and local courts.


Courts of general jurisdiction are located in all cities of Ukraine and hear cases related to civil, administrative and criminal offenses.

The only body of constitutional jurisdiction is the Constitutional Court of Ukraine. Its task is to interpret the norms of the Constitution and check the conformity of the norms of other legal acts with the Basic Law.

Requirements for judges

The Constitution stipulates that justice in our country is established only in courts. It also contains a list of requirements for judges and those applying for this position.

  • Legal education is a mandatory requirement for every candidate for the post of judge.
  • Work experience. Even a person with a legal education, but without relevant work experience, cannot apply for the seat of a judge.
  • Proficiency in the Ukrainian language.
  • Residence in Ukraine for 10 years or more.

Each employee of the court to one degree or another is responsible for making fair and unbiased decisions in various court processes. Judges are not subject to any other body of executive or legislative power and make decisions only in accordance with the laws of Ukraine.
