International Postman Day

Postman Day was founded in honor of the efforts of the first newspaper delivery man employed in the United States by the New York City Museum. It happened in 1833, when 10-year-old Blarney Flaherty took a stack of newspapers and went outside for the first time. His cries of “Newspaper! Take your newspaper, here!” – sounded for the first time on the streets of the city.

Ten years later, Postman Day is celebrated by all those who followed in his footsteps. The holiday has been celebrated since 1969 by the decision of the XVI Congress of the Postman Union, which gathered in Tokyo. The congress itself was formed on October 9, 1874, so this date was chosen for the holiday.

In many countries, the celebration lasts a whole week and is accompanied by the release of special series of postage stamps. At festive events, topical problems of postal communication are raised, so it is not only entertaining and educational, but also useful from a practical point of view.
