International No Smoking Day
What day is it?
Every November, on the third Thursday of the month, the world celebrates International No Smoking Day (the original name is No Smoking Day). This event was founded by the American Cancer Society back in 1977, when scientists proved the existence of negative effects of smoking on human health and the relationship between the occurrence of cancer and regular smoking.
- The World Health Organization draws attention to the fact that 90% of deaths from lung cancer are caused by smoking, smoking also causes 75% of cases of chronic bronchitis and 25% of cases of ischemic heart disease.
Statistics among Ukrainians are also disappointing: the country has 9 million active smokers – this is the majority of the male population, a tenth of the female population, and half of high school students. Children’s smoking is increasing: 60% of graduates smoke openly, which cannot but affect the development of the body.
International No Smoking Day aims to inform humanity about the harmful effects of this habit, to involve as many people as possible in the fight against smoking, and to help reduce addiction.
